AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, prepares students for high school and college. AVID provides students the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college. Students are taught study skills, note-taking, organizational skills, time management, writing, and research skills while being immersed in a college-going culture. Our team works diligently to ensure students are being supported and challenged in rigorous classes. The Site Team consists of AVID teachers, administrators, and counselors.

Woodson School is dedicated to preparing all students for college and career readiness.  Our goal is to empower all students to maximize their individual potential, by teaching them various strategies to implement, in order to be successful in rigorous coursework and future endeavors. Our objective is to encourage all students to set goals and to be confident in their ability to achieve those ambitions. Students are taught academic vocabulary, using critical thinking skills, engaging in collaborative tutorials, taking Cornell notes, and implementing various WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies.

AVID impacts more than one million students in more than 4,900 schools and 28 post-secondary institutions in 46 states, the District of Columbia and across 16 other countries/territories. The AVID College Readiness System spans elementary through higher education and is offered at Corning High School.  The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. What distinguishes AVID from other educational programs is its continuous success rate.
